Paper or Plastic? The Right Choice for Shipping Void Fill

What Are Your Shipping Goals?

When it comes to shipping, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Different content requires different packaging, handling, and protection.

Here’s a common question we get from clients: What is the best void fill to use to fill boxes for shipping?

The answer? It depends! What is your shipping goal? Are you trying to fill boxes to ensure stability during transport? Are you trying to prevent damage to fragile contents?

Whatever your shipping needs, Greeno helps you find the answer.

Filling the Box

If stability is your main concern and your contents don’t need added protection, then paper packaging and peanuts are a simple, inexpensive fix.

It's true that packing peanuts can be messy and some people shy away from them because of environmental concerns, but they remain a reliable, easily sourced shipping solution.

Paper packaging solutions are similarly inexpensive and can be less impactful to the environment. Kraft paper rolls, for instance, are made from 100% recycled material. Newsprint rolls are also made from recycled material and can be used as effective void fill when in a crinkled or crumpled up. To improve packing efficiency, pair a Kraft paper roll with the Kraft Paper Crumpler for a streamlined process.

Protecting What’s Inside

When the items you’re shipping need added protection, simple void fill won’t do the job. It may be necessary to wrap your items to protect them from sharp impacts. You'll also need to consider weight and shape as you decide how to protect your shipment. Let’s take a look at three popular solutions when protection is a priority.

  • Bubble Cushion Wrap – Highly effective protection for items of various weights, but takes up a lot of storage space and can be expensive to ship if not locally sourced.
  • Industrial Foam – Absorbs shock to protect items, and protects against moisture as it provides surface protection, but, like bubble wrap, industrial foam could take up more shelf space than you’re willing to part with.
  • Crumpled Kraft Paper, Tissue, or Newsprint – We already know this favorite is inexpensive and environmentally friendly, but it won’t stand up to heavy weight or impacts for long.
