Which Plastic Straps Are Best: Polypropylene Or Polyester

Strapping is the key to having a complete protective packaging system. It's the last item installed on an outgoing package, and the first line of defense to protect your shipment. Choosing the right strapping for your specific shipment is critical. Common strapping materials include polypropylene, polyester, cord strap, and steel.

For the purposes of this blog we will focus on the two most popular plastic strapping products: Polypropylene and Polyester.

The Benefits Of Polypropylene Strapping

Polypropylene strapping (PP) is a good lightweight option for shipping:

  • Banded newspapers and magazines
  • Corrugated sheets and boxes
  • Meat and seafood packaging
  • And many agricultural products

Polypropylene straps stretch and elongate with the package as tension is applied. This ensures excellent elongation recovery and will provide a tight fit for your shipment.

PP strapping is ideal for lighter loads with shorter transit time. It is also recyclable and the least expensive option of all strapping, but with a lower break strength.

Polypropylene straps can be applied using handheld manual or power tools, automatic strapping machines and semi-automatic strapping machines.

The Benefits Of Polyester Strapping

Polyester Strapping (PET) works well with heavier loads such as:

  • Lumber
  • Brick
  • Block
  • Drywall
  • Glass bottles
  • Cans
  • And other heavier pallets

It is considered an excellent alternative to steel strapping for several reasons including break strength and its ability to retain tension, safety and cost.

When comparing PET to steel it is important to note that while steel is very strong, it is rigid and far less elastic than plastic. Once a load is banded and sealed with steel it is permanently fixed. If the load shifts or compresses in transit that steel strap will become loose, and the load will no longer be secure.

Polyester strap will rebound and continue to keep changing loads secure, giving the shipper peace of mind (especially those with longer transit times).

Polyester strapping is good for heavier loads, longer transit times, and is recyclable.

It's generally applied manually or with a handheld power tool (battery operated and pneumatic). Polyester is considerably less expensive than steel but costs more than polypropylene.
