A sunny day at the Big E was a little brighter this year as Greenough Packaging and Maintenance Supplies and fairgoers take time out to remember those suffering from Breast Cancer.
The Big E is an annual, 17-day fair held at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, MA. Like many businesses near The Big E grounds, Greenough Packaging & Maintenance Supplies, Inc. (Greeno Supply), opened up their parking lot to help accommodate the more than 1.25 million visitors that descend upon the city for the event.
This year, Greenough decided to donate $1 per parked car during the fair, to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Greenough's CEO, Sandy Cassanelli, said “We decided to start this fundraiser because I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer this year, and our friends and family have been touched by this disease so many times that we felt compelled to get involved.
Big E patrons who parked in the lot were so moved by both the cause and Greenough’s gesture, that they made additional donations above and beyond Greenough’s $1 contribution. In addition, numerous Big E patrons, who did not park in the lot, handed the lot attendants donations after they read the sign as they walked by to the fair grounds.
In total, Greenough collected and donated $1,700 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation within the 17 day period.
Ms. Cassanelli added, “We choose the Breast Cancer Research Fund because we liked the idea that 91 cents of every dollar is spent on breast cancer research and awareness programs.” In addition, she noted that “Everyone here was touched by the level of concern and participation by fairgoers who were just walking by and who felt so moved that they made a donation.”
